I am getting ready to populate my catalog and go live, but, as not in english, i need to make sure everything is correct. A simle question for a pro: in MS2, is all visible text included in the language files only? (so, for english, the english.php plus all files under the english/ directory) - this is for ALL VISIBLE TEXT (for customers, not admins), as in, -webpages viewable on site -error messages -pop-ups -email texts -copywrite notices -title bars/menu names & titles -etc. etc. i.e. EVERYTHING and also, the manufacturer names and item names will save in the language typed in when you add them in the admin section to your catalog? thanks: ======== PS - A bonus question: when entering text into the catalog, is there a way to control encoding? For japanese, for example, when you type, encoding will be either EUC, JIS, or Shift-JIS, yet all japanese. Usually you simply save the file with encoding as you want, but, ALL elements on screen must be in the same encoding (since it pulls text from several different files to make one viewable page.) -- if it's not the same, then the menues and title bars will read correct, but the main text will be gibberish; or vice versa. Anyway, i entered some text items into a test shop and some of the items showed up online NOT encoded correctly, but others were correct. I don't know anything about the database and am a basic PHP coder... but i'm not sure how to encode the text of things being pulled from the database. I deleted those items and put them in again, and they worked,but, for my main store... i'd like to know if there's just a way to control this or not. Thanks! ((this is extra! Also don't forget to translate the pages in the Information box (Shipping & Returns, Privacy Notice,...)--that will all be specific for your operation. Also, some language packs may be more complete than others... Good question re database encoding. Actually I've got the Japanese language pack installed, but our product info is still not translated. In other words, no problem for php encoding, but no idea on the database. I do have trad. Chinese in the database, no problem there--but Japanese encoding seems more complicated (EUC, JIS, Shift-JIS). Lastly, the only Japanese language pack I could find is for MS1, you'll have to do some mods to get it to work on MS2. (Sorry, I didn't keep a list.) "Buy the ticket, take the ride..." -HST
wlpywd Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 Yes, i had to do a lot of "tweaking" to make the japanese work as well. I did have the english/german language files of ms2 translated into [correct] japanese, but the files wouldn't work quite right, and since my 'tweeked' site was working, i didn't follow up. so i can't upload 'em for anyone else looking. I Did get my database to save in EUC japanese correctly, i think it's just a matter of your server being set up to accept or not; linix/unix and the newest mysql/php seem to have no trouble at all. I'm sorry for ya'll on MS servers, i can't offer any advice. One Big Problem:::::::: When i save a sub-category or product name, it truncates what i type in to 4 EUC charictors (8 single-bt char) and will not display the entire name. Where is it doing this??? And how can i save them with longer names? i have no idea which files to start looking in to correct this. Any advice will be GREATLY APPRICIATED!!
