Hi list,

I am debating wether to change all my images into gif or going through osc and changing mod to allow jpg.

What are your thoughts on this. I understand the differences between gif and jpg.

My fear is finding 'all' and the 'correct' mod coding to change to jpg.

Thank you.

Why would you have to change anything to use .jpg images?

Local: Mac OS X 10.5.8 - Apache 2.2/php 5.3.0/MySQL 5.4.10 • Web Servers: Linux

Tools: BBEdit, Coda, Versions (Subversion), Sequel Pro (db management)

Well the standard web design usage is GIF for buttons, icons, etc and JPG for larger images such as product images ... which is the way osC is setup. IMHO, I think it's best to stick with that. :) The only thing I might recommend changing is the header image. I think that is GIF by default but it's getting tough to remember now. ;)

Hello,

Sorry for my newbie question.

I am under the impression that if I want to use jpg images I need to change some of the coding in osc to direct it to the correct extensions.

For example the header logo, oscommerce.gif. To make this a jpg I need to change the coding to img src="images/oscommerce.jpg", while including the oscommerce.jpg in the image folder. This is a simple example.

But what do you do with the products? Does each entry need changeing to comply with jpg images? I would think that if osc easly allows you to add product as gifs one after the other would this be the better choice than to change each entry coding to jpg after entering one after another. Maybe I have missed something? It could be only a case of having to change the one code to accept jpg. But where to look.

Sorry for the ramble. Hope you can guide me.

Thank you.

For product images, there is no extension hard-coded for the images. If you upload JPG, it will display JPG. :)

The hard-coded extensions are only present for the banner, buttons, icons, etc. which aside from perhaps the banner, should all remain as GIF.

Hi list,

Kool I am starting to understand alittle more.

The reason I was thinking in that direction was because I have added my first product to my osc. The image is only displaying an empty square with a cross symble in it. I thought because it was a jpg, it really wanted a gif. As you say, not the case.

When I go to upload the product I am getting;

Error: Destination not writeable.

Error: Catalog images directory is not writeable: /publish1/sitegeneral/mysite.com.au/images/

Any clues?

Thank you.
