Write to the configuration file

On my storefront I am receiving this error at the very top:

Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /var/www/html/oscommerce/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file

 

How do I fix this? I don't have an SSL so i changed the confirgure file to false rather than true, but thats it. Is it just easier if I buy a SSL and change everything to true? If so, where do you recommend me buying one?

Set the file permissions to at either 555 or 444 or the configure.php file. If you are using *nix then use chmod or if you are using windows just right click the file, choose properties and set it to read-only.

I am on a Mac. I changed to read only and used the admin to upload the file. It still isn't working, what else am I doing wrong?
