Help: Basic Payment Module Problem

Hi there,

 

Ok here is the problem.

 

I am struggling to fathom out how the payment modules work.

 

I need to pass to a page, an amount, and if needed a reference from the cart to a pay page set up to me by my payment system. If it passes, it passes the id back, amount, email address and a trasaction reference.

 

I can easily jump out of checkout_confirmation.php into the above system with the information needed by it to make the payment, but which url do i jump back to, and what do i need to do to cause the cart to believe the payment has been made?
