Im sort of confused as to what paypal contribution i need that allows people to pay instantly w/ a credit card on my site w/o having to sign up w/ paypal.

This is only available to US residents. As well, it's an option that you have to turn on in your paypal account.

Okay - we've turned it on in our paypal back office but it still doesn't show up as an option. do we setup to pay with paypal? or credit card?

You have to enable the PayPal module in admin. But before doing that, I would install the PayPall IPN contribution if I were you. It has many more features than the stock one (like a test mode) and is currently being actively supported.

try to download it and find the readme files, take some time to read b4 you ask (you are the one who has to understand it)

thanks, i just downloaded the above paypal_shopping_cart_ipn. although i haven't installed yet, it looks like a very professional job and is well documented with clear installation instructions. i am going to use this app and will let you know how it goes.
