I'm a little curious how this relates to osCommerce...

I've never had a package take that long, but the postal service is legendary for it.

Well, I'm in Canada but ship most of my packages by Canada Post air mail, connecting with USPS into the States.

Last September, I sent about 20 packages out the same day. Some were sent by trackable services, others not. I got calls from two customers on the East Coast that they had not received their packages about 3 weeks later. (Trackable packages to the East coast had arrived within delivery standard timeframes.)

A week later, they still had not received them, so I re-sent their orders. Their new orders showed up about 8 business days later and -- lo and behold! -- a couple of days later, the stray packages also magically appeared.

Whether they got lost in a sorting plant or took the slow boat from China I don't know, but it definitely does happen, unfortunately.

Agreed. I got a CF card off eBay and it took nearly a month to arrive. Granted the seller did take 10 days to send it, but following that it remained in the possession of USPS for about 2.5 weeks to travel only 500 miles.

On one occasion where I was the seller, I even had a package with a Delivery Confirmation # get lost. It turns out USPS screwed up and printed duplicate tickets for one confirmation # and my package ended up at the address for the other ticket, in the hands of someone who swore they never received it. Luckily I insured that one. :)

We had UPS (what can brown screw for you) have a package go in about 15 circles. One of our sales reps put a bad street name on the package (off by one letter). UPS would deliver it... Undeliverable address, returned to hub for retry... Undeliverable address, returned to hub for retry... We contacted them during the 3rd return to hub to tell them it was wrong and to send it back to us or to change the address "We can't change the address until it reaches a destination"... THERE WAS NO DESTINATION!!! So, it went in that circle about 12 more times until they finally sent it back.

My wife ordered bridesmaid dresses for our wedding and UPS delivered them to the Middle School up the street who's address was the same of ours but the numbers switched around. This was during summer and UPS left it outside a door. Luckily a maintenance person put it in a room full of other boxes. It took a while to get ahold of someone at the closed school to find it. It was addressed correctly.

seriously...??? that is just wrong

that is probably the very last step the post office would go though (i hope), if its not possible to do anything else with it, minus well sell it.. i understand that very well, but the fact is, after we hand over the money and the package, it is then their FULL responsilibity to send the package. However, i also realize that everyone makes mistakes.. But they shouldn't use that to their own benefits saying "we all make mistakes" everytime they lose a package.......

as well as selling packages that aren't even theirs to make profit is wrong in my eyes.... instead they should auction off 'lost' packages and give the money to charity

I'm sure it's possible that it could happen that way.

I worked at UPS for a while, so I can rant about that for a good long while...but chances are, unless your package is very obviously something very valuable and easily concealed, nobody will be interested. I saw some people abscond with DVDs after a box full of them broke open, and there was a big ruckus when a box full of assorted "mature" magazines split open all over the bottom of the truck. Other than that, they're all cardboard boxes to the package handlers.

UPS at least has a program that offers a very large reward for employees who can prove that other employees are stealing packages. I don't know if other carriers have the same sort of system set up.

My advice to you:

If you can't afford to lose it, don't send it first class mail - use something with a tracking number.

If you REALLY can't afford to use it, UPS has much better tracking capabilities and a better guarantee than USPS. I don't have much experience with FedEx, DHL or any of the others so I can't say.

Regardless of how you ship it, pad it well and make sure the package won't easily come open.

Thanks very much, Chris, also since you've worked for UPS

what are the chances of a lost package showing up at my doorstep anytime this month or next?

if slim by how much? 2%? 3%?

i can always hope ;)

GREAT NEWS!!! i talked to my cousin earlier today, and what happened was the post office never sent it out because he never put a return address... so i am really relieved...

however.. it took 3 weeks for them to call them on the phone and tell them to come pick up the package or re-ship it... <_<

but i shouldnt be complainin since it should be here any day :D
