Image Resizeing

I am trying to understand what size the images should be when first uploading them. The issue I have is that when I upload a product image it looks good only in one size, the thumbnail does not look good and the enlarged version is the same sixe as the regular size image.

 

When can I go to learn how to properly deal with images. I tried the doucmentation but did not see anything right off.
