Hybrid Ecommerce
August 16, 2022
osCommerce brings a new type of Ecommerce platform to the market - a so called Hybrid Ecommerce. So what is Hybrid Ecommerce? We see it to be the best of both worlds - an open source (and free) Ecommerce solution that is also hosted as if it was SaaS (or EaaS - Ecommerce as a Service). This means users (businesses and developers) do not need to worry about hosting requirements and at the same time have full access to the source code and can change or implement any custom features, integrations, etc. Of course, it is always possible to host osCommerce on your own server! It is just so much easier (and quite likely more cost effective!) to use osCommerce's own hosting solutions.  Hybrid Ecommerce from osCommerce Users can choose to have osCommerce installed for free on one of our servers to try osCommerce before use.  Once satisfied with its features, speed, robustness - they can choose to move to a paid osCommerce hosting account or to download and use osCommerce site on their own server. Move to an osCommerce-managed server is done automatically. Server environment is optimised for osCommerce, allowing it to give the best performance. It is also managed and upgraded with the latest server software. Most importantly, osCommerce installation can be automatically updated to the latest version of osCommerce (and Applications) as well. Any customisations, done right, will stay but all the standard modules and the core of osCommerce will be regularly updated, bringing fixes, changes, new features. Full FTP and mySQL access are offered to businesses and developers should they require such.   ...

osCommerce proudly developed in the UK and Ukraine
July 27, 2022
As many readers would know, osCommerce is headquartered from the UK but the majority of our team members are in Ukraine. Same as it was for Magento btw, and for many other amazing technological solutions. What many readers perhaps do not realize is that osCommerce continues to be developed while the war is raging in Ukraine.  For example, the final touches to version 4 were made in the evening, while air raid sirens were wailing in many locations in Ukraine where our colleagues are located. We would like to once again express our appreciation and applaud the strong spirit of our colleagues who managed to complete their task (be it with a delay) and release osCommerce 4.0! Those men and women who continue to work hard on adding more features, enabling the App Shop, fixing those teething problems that users of osCommerce report to us. We are working hard to release more features and solutions, and will be updating you in due course! ...

osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 RC2a Released
This is a bugfix release that replaces osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 RC2. The only changes that have been made include the following 2 bugfixes that were introduced with 2.2 RC2:   Use of PHP 5 only stripos() function during the database restoration routine on the Administration Tool. A compatibility function has been added to work on PHP <5 servers. A PHP warning message is produced on requests where the session has not been started (ie, for search engine spiders). This is due to referencing the $_SESSION superglobal variable in tep_session_is_registered() which does not exist if the session has not started. A check for this variable has been added to this function. It is strongly recommended that existing v2.2 RC2 installations apply the following changes to correct the above issues: https://svn.oscommerce.com/fisheye/changelog/osCommerce/?cs=1829 https://svn.oscommerce.com/fisheye/changelog/osCommerce/?cs=1830 osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 Release Candidate 2a can be downloaded here: https://www.oscommerce.com/redirect.php/go,44 An upgrade guide for existing osCommerce 2.2 Release Candidate 1 installations can be found here: https://www.oscommerce.com/ext/upgrade-22rc2.html This announcement can be discussed on the community support forums at: https://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=289553 We wish you the best of fun with this release and look forward to your feedback!
osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 RC2 Released
We are proud to announce an advancement of the osCommerce 2.2 release series with the new osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 Release Candidate 2 release. This second release candidate addresses issues introduced in the previous release candidate release and addresses longer termed issues from 2.2 Milestone 2. No major features have been introduced with this release candidate as our development efforts are focused on our upcoming 3.0 release, but does include the following changes:   Over 15 bug fixes and improvements. Improved register_globals compatibility layer for PHP 4.3+ servers. New and updated payment modules that include PayPal Express Checkout, PayPal Direct Payments, PayPal Website Payments Standard, Authorize.net AIM and SIM, WorldPay, and more. Introduce the ability for payment modules to show checkout buttons on the shopping cart page. Introduce the ability for order shipping and billing addresses to be defined from an external source (ie, payment method). Introduce a public status flag on order status levels to show or hide orders from customers depending on the order status level. Introduce a download flag on order status levels to allow customers to download virtual products at specific order status levels. Introduce version signature strings to payment modules that link to the add-ons site for easier version tracking. osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 Release Candidate 2 can be downloaded here: https://www.oscommerce.com/redirect.php/go,43 An upgrade guide for existing osCommerce 2.2 Release Candidate 1 installations can be found here: https://www.oscommerce.com/ext/upgrade-22rc2.html This announcement can be discussed on the community support forums at: https://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=289553 We wish you the best of fun with this release and look forward to your feedback!
osCommerce Online Merchant v3.0 and PHP 5
The PHP Group recently announced that support for PHP 4 will be discontinued at the end of this year to focus on the production-ready PHP 5 and the upcoming PHP 6 releases. The announcement from the PHP Group can be read here: https://www.php.net/index.php#2007-07-13-1 This announcement impacts our current v3.0 development roadmap, our vision for the final v3.0 release, and our support policy for released versions, where we have decided to also drop support for PHP 4 in osCommerce Online Merchant v3.0 and to optimize it for PHP 5. This gives us v3.0 Alpha 5 and v3.0 Alpha 6 to remove PHP 4 compatibility coding logic and to optimize the framework with the new features PHP 5 provides. As the current state of the v3.0 framework has already moved to an Object Oriented design, optimizing it for PHP 5 will be a simple task worth doing now to avoid jumping to v4.0 so soon which was planned to be PHP 5 optimized. Optimizing osCommerce Online Merchant v3.0 for PHP 5 now allows us to further improve and strengthen the framework and to pass the high quality level of coding to community developers to base their add-ons on. The performance of the framework will improve by removing the PHP 4 compatibility layer and by taking advantage of the new features PHP 5 provides such as SimpleXML, DateTime, Iterators, and new core functions. The design and security of the Object Oriented framework will also improve by utilizing the new features of the PHP 5 Object Model. Our support policy for the v3.x release series is to publish a release with new features every 6 months and to support each published release for 2 years. Removing the PHP 4 compatibility layer now for the v3.0 release allows us to focus only on PHP 5 without the need to spend resources on PHP 4 compatibility past its end of life cycle. Many hosting providers have been supporting PHP 5 in recent years together with PHP 4 where this change will not impact many users. The number of providers supporting PHP 5 will increase by the end of the year to match the end of life support for PHP 4. The osCommerce Online Merchant v2.x release series will continue to be compatible with PHP 3, PHP 4, and PHP 5 from v2.2 onwards. We are highly motivated about this change in focus and look forward in making osCommerce Online Merchant v3.0 an even better release. This announcement can be discussed on the community support forums at: https://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=270025
osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 RC1 Released
We are proud to announce an advancement of the osCommerce 2.2 release cycle with a new release titled osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 Release Candidate 1. This is primarily a bug fix release for the 2.2 series and will be the last release made before the 2.2 release series is finalized. We are currently in the process of certifying the payment modules included in this release which will be the only change for the final osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 release planned in the coming weeks. No major features have been introduced with this release candidate as our development efforts are focused on our upcoming 3.0 release, but does include the following changes: * Over 25 bug fixes and improvements * register_globals compatibility for PHP 4.3+ servers * Visa PCI conformance of accepting credit card information on the checkout confirmation page * Public titles for payment modules so the name of the payment service provider is not used as a payment method * Maximum number of product quantities that can be added to the shopping cart (by default 99) * New login routine for the Administration Tool * New summary modules to display on the Administration Tool index page * New web-based installation routine (backported from 3.0) This release candidate also introduces a new name for the solution titled "osCommerce Online Merchant" that strengthens our presence and marketing efforts for our upcoming releases. osCommerce Online Merchant v2.2 Release Candidate 1 can be downloaded here: https://www.oscommerce.com/redirect.php/go,41  (hosted at Sunsite.dk) An upgrade guide for existing osCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2 060817 installations can be found here: https://www.oscommerce.com/ext/osc22rc1_upgrade.html.zip This announcement can be discussed on the community support forums at: https://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=268335 We wish you the best of fun with this release and look forward to your feedback!

osCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2 060817 Update Released
An update to the osCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2 version has been released that addresses security related issues and bug reports that exist in the released version. It is recommended for osCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2 store owners to apply the changes to their installations due to the security issues and bug reports that have been fixed. The changes involved are minimal, do not break compatibility with contributions, and further strengthens the security of the shop installation. This update release focuses solely on security related issues and bug reports, and does not introduce any new features that have been made for the next development milestone release. This release is a full release package containing updated source files (including the updates from the 051113 Update release), documentation, and information on what changes have been made to easily apply to existing installations. This update release includes the following changes: * Magic Quotes Compatibility Layer Fix * Parse GET Variables In Cache Functions * PHP 3 Session ID XSS Issue * Product Attributes SQL Injection * Resize Images To Round Numbers * Use The Correct Country Name Value When Formatting Addresses * Prevent The Session ID Being Passed In Tell-A-Friend E-Mails * Properly Remove Deleted Products That Exist In Shopping Carts The documented changes found inside the download package can be seen here: https://www.oscommerce.com/ext/update-20060817.html The 2.2 Milestone 2 060817 Update release involves the following file changes for the security and bug fixes made: catalog/admin/includes/functions/compatibility.php (2 diffs) catalog/admin/includes/functions/general.php (1 diff) catalog/includes/classes/sessions.php (1 diff) catalog/includes/classes/shopping_cart.php (2 diffs) catalog/includes/functions/cache.php (4 diffs) catalog/includes/functions/compatibility.php (2 diffs) catalog/includes/functions/general.php (2 diffs) catalog/includes/functions/html_output.php (1 diff) catalog/shopping_cart.php (1 diff) catalog/tell_a_friend.php (2 diffs) We'd like to thank James Bercegay from GulfTech Security Research ( https://www.gulftech.org ) for bringing security issues to our attention. New Live Shops Directory Site
The osCommerce team is proud to present another addition to the osCommerce Network - the osCommerce Live Shops Directory site - that replaces the live shops section on the support site. The new site provides a new means to navigate through the thousands of entries by filtering through them at a category level. This allows shops of interest to be quickly found in a specific category that was not previously possible. There are two views available for the category listings with a normal column based listing view, and a cloud view showing which categories contain the most entries with the size of its heading. We hope the fun factor is present when browsing through the categories and entries with the new design, and look forward to announcing additional features to the site in the near future. We'd like to thank store owners who submit their shops to the listings for making such a site possible! The new Live Shops Directory site can be reached at: https://shops.oscommerce.com This announcement can be discussed on the community support forums at: https://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=218107
New Public Development Server
The osCommerce team is proud to present the latest addition to the osCommerce Network - the osCommerce Development Server - that is dedicated to the development of the osCommerce solution. The main focus of the new site is to foster a development community to participate in the 3.0 development cycle and to prototype ideas for the next generation framework. The osCommerce Development Server provides public access to the development repository that contains the latest source code to the development version and a complete history of changes to reference on. In addition to public access, the development server also holds a Wiki, timeline, and ticket section that can reference each others data. We are extremely excited to be able to provide public access to the development repository again after it was suspended to have put all focus from the development team into the new framework. With learning from the experiences gained earlier, the issues relating to the development versions are now handled by an external site that does not interfere with the Community Support Forums. In addition to the services provided, an official #osCommerce IRC channel is also now available on the Freenode network where real-time based discussions with other developers are held. This improves the communication between developers considerably and remains unobtrusive throughout ones working day. The current areas of focus the development team would like to attract developers in with the introduction of the development server include: * Core Framework * Languages * Usability / User Interface * Database Optimizations If you are interested in participating with the development of the project, please visit the osCommerce Development Server at: https://svn.oscommerce.com/trac Please note that although the development repository is available to the public, we do not endorse the use of development versions for production use. We look forward to the development groups the development server will attract, and the growth of the development team that realizes future project releases. This announcement can be discussed on the community support forums at: https://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=209547
